Jamie Carragher has stated that Arsenal’s Declan Rice is the only high profile and high class holding midfielder that England has but the lad is being overworked by Gareth Southgate.
He stated that Declan Rice has looked very exhausted for England in the two games that the Nation has so far played in the EURO 2024 Competition. He added that he is being overworked and that is why he is being overrun.
He gave a typical example of the second half against Denmark and stated that Declan Rice had far too much ground to cover and the Danish players started to surround him when he was in possession.
Gary Neville on the other end also said that Mikel Arteta had moved Declan Rice out of the number 6 position for the last 15 games of last season and he brought in Jorginho and Thomas Partey to play that position because Declan Rice is not good at playing in the position but playing a little bit upfront.
He added that his potential is not being fully utilized in the England squad because he can perform better in a more advanced midfield position as opposed to where Gareth Southgate is putting him to play.
Gareth Southgate has been overworking Declan Rice because he has been consistently pairing him with Trent Alexander Arnold who is not a natural midfielder. This has been the burden of Declan Rice because he has to cover a lot of ground and it is like he is playing two positions at a time.
Declan Rice is however a very good player when he has good partners and that was very well evident when Kalvin Philips was his partner. Gareth South himself admitted that they are really struggling to find the replacement for Kalvin Philips because they have so far not yet found and that is why he is gambling with experiments.
