Celebrated journalist Betty Kyallo has received a big blow after the residents of Karen called for the closure of her restaurant which is known as The Summer House. The residents have accused the restaurant of being too loud and thus depriving them their peace.
The Lang’ata District Association addressed their concern with the issue and wrote a letter on 25/11/2022 to the Nairobi City County government. In that letter, the residents raised their plight and said that the restaurant is causing unprecedented noise pollution through the playing of loud music at night thus causing a lot of discomfort in the neighborhood.
The Chairperson of that Association gave an order to the county government and stated that it should act with speed and if possible, revoke the license that was issued to the restaurant. According to him, there was no change of user of the property from residential to commercial by the relevant bodies.
The association also stated that the restaurant did not follow the due process as stipulated in the law. The public was also not involved and the residents were not given the opportunity to give their opinions before setting it up. According to them, not even a public announcement even in a newspaper was made to inform them of that development.
Last month also the Lang’ata Forest Edge Residents Association which is also an affiliate member of the Karen Lang’ata Residents Association also raised a complaint on the same restaurant claiming that it does not match the aesthetic value ideal for the area as per the stated policy for zoning.
The Association gave a seven day notice to the Director of County government of Nairobi to shut down that restaurant within one week, failure to which the association will move to court. This comes at a time when Governor Sakaja is conducting a crackdown on clubs that are playing loud music at night.
