Chelsea participated in its first game after the appointment of Graham Potter as the Head coach, following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel. The former Brighton Manager was given big shoes to fill and lead the team in the Champions League, the Premier League and other domestic Cups.
His first test was against FC Salzburg in the Champions League. He named a very strong squad with Kepa Arrizabalaga in the goalpost. His defence had Reece James, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Marc Cucurella. The midfield was also held by Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho. He also unleashed a full power house in the forward line with Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.
Despite having a very strong squad, the super stars did not put a spirited fight to give the new Coach a winning start. The first half was a dry one and there was no major action. It ended in a barren draw at half time.
Mason Mount gave Raheem Sterling a good pass in the second half and the English international player opened the score line. The team was unable to protect the lead and FC Salzburg pulled one goal back through Noah Okafor. The team pushed harder and made the Blues to succumb to pressure and settle for a draw. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The display of Chelsea showed that Graham Potter still has a long way to go and it will take him some time in order to get the best out of the players that he has found in the club before signing the players that he needs.
