DJ Aisher’s Journey From a Kenyan Medical Student to a DJ in Germany
DJ Aisher who is a female DJ in Germany narrated her story on how she changed from a Medical student in Kenya and became a Disk Jockey in a foreign land. She narrated that she is a luo lady from Migori County. She started her school in Migori Primary but she later transferred to Tanzania before she came back to Kenya to do her KCPE. She then proceeded for her Secondary Education at Oyugi Ogango Girls Secondary School.
She performed well and she qualified to join the University after exceling in her KCSE exams. She was selected to do Medicine but she could not proceed to the University because of lack of school fees. She then got an organization which was known as Hope Care and they took her to Germany to take care of children by picking them from school when their parents are not around. She got a good family and she was just taking care of one child who was seven years old.
After her stay had expired, she had to look for means of surviving so that she escapes the risk of being deported. She found some African friends who helped her. She was accommodated by a Ugandan lady. She used to get some little cash during this period by washing dishes in one of the restaurants. The unfortunate thing that happened is that she forgot her travelling ticket in the former house that she used to stay in.
According to her, in Germany you pay for the fare like one month ahead so your work is to just show the ticket whenever you want to use public transport. She was caught by the police and she stayed in custody for one day. She then opened up and told the police everything. She even narrated that she did not want to go back to Kenya. They were kind enough and offered to help her out. They directed her to go to an asylum.
She got shelter there while they were still processing her papers. They wanted to deported her and this gave her a lot of depression since they are orphans and she was the only hope of the family. According to her, they are nine siblings and they don’t have a mother or a father because they had all passed away. She even wanted to commit suicide because she did not want to come back without achieving what she went for.
Her aim was to return after achieving what she wanted. She was pardoned on medical grounds after it was realized that she was going to commit suicide if deported. She then continued to stay in the asylum with a friend. She also narrated that the stay there was a very good one because they were living in an apartment and they were only sharing the room two people. The government was also taking good care of them because they used to get free medical attention and also get close to 35,000 shillings monthly as their upkeep.
She decided to enroll for a Nursing course and she sponsored it by herself while still staying at the asylum. She successfully finished her studies and got a job immediately. She narrated that it is very easy to get nursing jobs in Germany because of the shortage of nurses. She worked there for some time and she specialized in dealing with the old people. It was somehow tough for her because of the criticism that she used to get from some patients because of her skin color, but she took it positively.
According to her, she started nurturing her talent and career as a DJ when she was still at the asylum. She used to make mixes using Virtual DJ using her laptop. This was just for entertainment purposes of her friends. She used to attend birthday parties and mix for them. Her friends advised her that she could do it better and she took the challenge. She learnt everything by herself from scratch. She just used to watch the YouTube tutorials and videos. This is how she became perfect in her skills.
She then started to do it in clubs and concerts. She narrated that she has been supporting the African artists when they have concerts in Germany. Some of the artists who she has worked with are like Burna Boy and Diamond. This is an indication that she is doing a great work. She is also a good ambassador of Kenyan music. She has been promoting the artists who are doing well and the ones who are still upcoming. She admitted that she pushed Mejja’s song which is known as Tabia za Wakenya.
According to her, when she plays the music of the artist, they all benefit. It helps her to push her brand and it also helps the artists to get more followers and fans. This is because if they are impressed with the music, they go and look for the artists and follow them hence increasing their fan base. This is a good thing because she always acknowledges the copyright owners of the songs and she is not just doing it for her own personal gains but for the benefit of the artists too.
DJ Aisher also talked about his all-time favorite Kenyan artists. She named Sauti Sol and said that they are the most loved in Germany. This is because they know how to do live band perfectly without backup. She has not specialized in any genre of music. She plays all the genres like the Afrobeats which is the African Music. She is also a lover of reggae music.
She only started to play the Rhumba music during the lockdown period. Most people advised her to continue with the Rhumba. It also pays her well because the older people know how to appreciate her work. She added that she has realized that the Medical field is not her portion and she will continue with her work as a DJ because it is equally paying her well and she enjoys doing that job.
