A lady was left weeping after all that she worked for went into the drains because she went home with barely nothing after her employer deducted a whooping 4K from her 5K salary.
According to sources, the employer deducted a total of 4757 shillings from her salary and paid her only 528 shillings. The deductions were made because a customer paid for the bills and later reversed that money so the employer deemed it fit to recover the money from her salary.
One of the lawyers was contacted and he said that the lady lamented to him that she was underpaid because one of the customers reversed the money that he had paid and therefore she was left with the to carry the burden of a customer who was ill mannered.
The lawyer said that legally speaking, no employer has the powers and the mandate to deduct any amount from the agreed wages that one should be paid except only the deductions that are permitted by the law like taxes, pension and other statutory deductions as stipulated in the law.
He added that there are things that must be done for an employer to deduct money from an employee’s wages for damages that was caused to his or her own business. He added that there must be a written consent of an authorized labor officer. He also added that the deductions that have been proposed must also be of a reasonable amount.
It was indeed a bad idea to take much from the little that the poor employee was taking home. Imagine earning a mere 5K in this tough economy and then your employer decides to take it all because they care so much about their business at the expense of the person toiling hard to make sure that those customers are served well and the continue to come regularly.
