The Life Story of the Late Veteran Journalist Catherine Kasavuli

Catherine Kasavuli who is a Kenyan veteran journalist, was born in 1962 and she was bread in Nairobi West. She did her high school at Ngara Girls and later started her career off as a radio continuity announcer back in 1980 at the then Voice of Kenya.

Her passion to pursue journalism was driven by her uncle who heard her voice while reading the Bible at one point even before hitting her 18th birthday. The uncle told her that she had a good voice and her diction was equally good.

It is her uncle still who urged her to even try her luck at the Voice of Kenya because there was a vacancy there. That is how she ended up going for the interview where they were 10 people and to her surprise, she impressed the panelists.

She was very good as a radio presenter and her voice made a lot of people to listen to radio at that time. She later transitioned to Television and after two years she attended the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.

At this time she could earn sh.1,500 per month but made some extra cash through commercials which would sometimes amount to sh.3,500. She had at one point stated that back in 1985 she at one point made sh. 25,000 from commercials and this was like sh.2 million currently.

She invested the money well and joined a Sacco and also opened an Eaglet account for her son. In 1990, she became part of the founding team of News anchors at KTN. At this time KTN was the first privately owned media house in Kenya.

Catherine Kasavuli then became the first female news anchor in Kenya and she was the first news anchor at KTN to go live.

She worked at KTN for a record 17 years. She then switched to Citizen TV in 2007 where she was an anchor but later got a promotion to become the Corporate Affairs Manager at Royal Media Service.

She later resigned in 2015 and ventured into business whereby she founded Kasavuli Media Group which also has a Training Institute for Broadcasters. She is a mother of only one son and in terms of honours, she was awarded the Order of Grand Warrior during the Jamhuri Day Celebrations in the year 2008.

The veteran journalist met her demise on 30.12.2022 after battling cervical cancer for a long period of time. Her death was announced by the KBC Acting Managing Director, Samuel Maina.
