Men who are polygamous can now smile after NHIF intervened and stated that all men who have more than one wife can now include them in their NHIF cover for just 500. The regulations have already been published and they will take effect if at all the National Assembly will pass the law.
This will also help Kenyans to come out of the Medical Insurance norms. For a polygamous man to include all his wives, he will need to part away with another 500 shillings for all the other additional wives.
Members who have more than one wife have always suffered with the Medical Insurance firms because they always recognize only one wife. This has always forced the polygamous men to look for other medical cover alternatives so that they can cover their other spouses.
The previous NHIF rules allowed for one wife and a maximum of five children. This new rule if passed will be a big win for men because all their family members will have to get and enjoy the benefits of NHIF without any discrimination.
According to the data from the Kenya Population and Census which was recently conducted, it was realized that over 1.5 million Kenyans are in polygamous marriages. The National Hospital Insurance Fund is seeking Kenyans to give their input on new regulations that they have suggested before the Parliament approves it.
If it is passed, then it will be a plus for the polygamous families. The only problem may be for those who are in a polygamous family but do not have the necessary marriage documentations.
