Key Highlights of Term Limits Including 5 to 7 Presidential Term Limits Proposal by Senator Samson Cherargei

The Senator of Nandi County, honorable Samson Cherargei has drafted a proposal that seeks to increase term limits for leaders. The following are some of the key highlights in that proposal:

Increase term limits of the President, Members of Parliament, Governors and the Members of the County Assembly from the current five years to a new term limit of 7 years.

The proposal also seeks to create a new position of the Prime Minister. This is a position that is also anchored in the NADCO Report and it was also in the BBI Report.

The proposal also seeks to give the National Senate the powers to vet Cabinet Secretaries, Attorney General, Auditor General, Police IG, the Chief Justice and the Judges. These roles are currently being conducted by the National Assembly. The National Assembly to vet the Ambassadors.

The proposal also seeks to give the Counties 40% of the National Revenue which is 25% more from the current one which is 15%.

The Proposal by the Nandi County Senator also suggests that the impeachment of the Governors and Deputy Governors to be challenged at the Supreme Court only and not the other courts. He also added that the determination of the cases should also be heard within one month that is 30 days.

The proposal also seeks to give both houses that is the National Senate and the National Assembly should approve the deployment of the Kenya Defense Forces.

Honorable Samson Cherargei will table his Bill in the National Senate for it to be debated on and either be approved or declined.
