Looming Diplomatic Row as Some African Countries Trying to Stop Raila’s AU bid are Revealed

Raila Odinga’s journey to becoming the next Chairperson of the African Union has faced another hurdle after it has emerged that there is another stronger African country that is planning to field a candidate who will rival the former Prime Minister.

The Standard Newspaper reported that one of the greatest hurdles that Raila Odinga is now facing is the fact that South Africa is planning to field a candidate for that same position. This is however contrary to the agreement that has been there because South Africa was the first country to hold that position.

The National Assembly Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman honorable Nelson Koech said that the government is committed to fully supporting honorable Raila Odinga to get the AU top job.

He also said that the government is also very much aware of the obstacles that are on their way and they are very much prepared to deal with each and every obstacle that will come their way.

Kenya is also facing another hurdle whereby some countries are advocating for gender parity and rotational leadership within the AU Commission. This is outlined in the Institutional Reform of the 2018 Kagame Report.

The Belgut Member of Parliament also highlighted that there are several countries that are trying the best to make sure that Kenya doesn’t get the opportunity to clinch that seat. The gender parity issue may seem a great threat for honorable Raila Odinga’s bid. These are indeed some serious issues and they pose a great threat to honorable Raila Odinga’s AU bid.
