“The Elephant is Back at the Top!” How Arsenal Struggled to Beat Brentford 1-0

Arsenal started the game against Brentford on a very high note and the players tried their best to create as many chances as possible but Brentford’s defence was very stiff and the defenders had read the game very well.

Aaron Ramsdale started for the first time in the Premier League since the club’s  early September victory over Manchester United because loanee David Raya was ineligible to play his parent club.

He was however shaky in the first half and he gifted the hosts with their first chance. The ball was inside Arsenal’s 6-yard box, but he dawdled on it for too long, and Yoane Wissa was able to pick his pocket and set up Bryan Mbuema. But Declan Rice recovered magnificently to block his shot at the line, and the ensuing rebound ricocheted off Wissa and went wide.

Chances were scarce in the first half, with Leandro Trossard missing the target on a header from a good Alex Zinchenko cross and Gabriel missing the target on a corner kick.

It was a major disappointment to Arsenal right off the bat, and it didn’t help that the players were doing their best but they were having trouble producing opportunities of their own on the opposite end.

A misplaced throw out by Ramsdale nearly put his defence in jeopardy again, but we turned the threat into a counterattack that eventually fizzled out after Bukayo Saka was dispossessed.

It appeared that Arsenal finally gained the lead as the first half came to a conclusion when the score line was 0-0. Jesus was aiming the cross at Mark Flekken when it was clipped inside the box by Saka’s. After the keeper parried the ball, it landed on Trossard’s head a yard out. The goal was first given by the referee on the pitch, but video review confirmed that Trossard was slightly offside as Jesus directed a header on goal.

Arsenal started the second half with a bit more focus and vigour than the first. However, even then, the odds were extremely slim. As both sides pressed for an advantage, play became rougher. Zinchenko made a last-ditch header save from substitute Neal Maupay, and Maupay missed the target with the ensuing shot.

Late in the game, Mikel Arteta substituted Eddie Nketiah and Havertz to add a spark.

Declan Rice drove a low shot just wide, via a deflection from 20 yards, and Nketiah bent a low shot too near to Flekken as we entered the closing ten minutes.

Havertz, the other late-game substitute, scored the winning goal. Patient buildup play resulted with Saka sending in a deep cross that Havertz dove to head between Flekken’s legs for the game-winning goal.
