Big Blow to Ruto as Court Stops New University Funding Model

President William Ruto has been dealt a major blow by the High Court of Kenya, this is after it temporarily suspended the implementation of the New University Funding Model. The ruling was delivered by Justice Chacha Mwita at the Milimani Law Courts.

He stated that, the case has been delaying because the government has failed to submit its arguments on time. The parties from the government are the Attorney General, the Cabinet Secretary of Education, Julius Ogamba and the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services.

The petitioners of this case argued that, the funding model is not satisfactory because, it will lock very many students out of school because of being placed in wrong bands. Several students had complained that, they were placed in wrong bands despite the fact that they come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The University students had also threatened that, they will go on strike if the new Universities Funding Model will be implemented. They said that, they better be allowed to use the old funding model because it was at least it used to cater for the interests of the students who come from families with low income.

The students said that, the government did not do a thorough public participation and did not incorporate them. They wanted their views to be taken so that they can also contribute to it.

It is now not very clear the direction that the government will take, now that the High Court, has decided to stop it from implementing the new Universities Funding model.
