Family, friends and villagers were left in utter shock after Maureen Wangui who is 29 years old threw herself and her five years old daughter who is known as Precious Wairimu into the swollen river Nyamindi.
Their bodies were later retrieved from the river by the police officers and they were taken to the morgue for preservation as they wait for the burial preparations. Unfortunately, Maureen Wangui’s body was floating very far away from her daughter’s lifeless body.
Her mother who is known as Irene Micere said that Maureen Wangui was brought up very well and she did not lack anything from her family. Her own problems are what overcame her and made her life very miserable.
She added that she got pregnant in the year 2019 when she was still in college pursuing her Diploma course. The man who was responsible for the pregnancy promised that he will tie the knot with her after finishing her studies.
She went on to say that the man was very supportive and even when Maureen Wangui gave birth, he used to always visit and he even bought clothes for the baby. He even bought clothes together with his parents.
Maureen Wangui’s mother agreed to take care of her granddaughter and she gave Maureen the chance to continue and finish her education. She later went back home and fought out that her baby was suffering from Meningitis and it later paralyzed her.
They spent most of the time on and off in the hospital and this could not even give her ample time of looking for a job to cater for their bills.
Things got sour when she learnt that her lover had moved on and married another lady. This made her very bitter because she felt betrayed and used. It reached a point where she could not even eat and all she could do was to scream.
She was later taken to Embu Referral Hospital where she was done for several checkups and she was also counselled. Maureen Wangui would sometimes threaten her parents that she would leave for a far journey and never return.
She one day after supper became violent and she threatened them that she will take her daughter and leave that night. She later cooled down after her father talked to her and calm her down.
Her mother said that she was an ambitious young lady who started her studies in Nutrition at the Certificate level, completed her Diploma in Nutrition and was also in the process of registering a Degree in Nutrition.
She then told her parents that she wants to visit her grandparents who stay at Kabiroini in Gichugu. She had earlier told her father to give her some portion of land for her to plant some coffee. They went with her father and he showed her the portion of land for coffee farming and she even planted trees to demarcate her portion. Her father then left her and went back home without knowing that it was the last time he was seeing her daughter alive.
Mr. Ngobo Kuruma who is the grandfather of Maureen Wangui said that she was just busy washing clothes at home and then she suddenly disappeared. That was the time she left and threw herself in the river together with her daughter and they all lost their lives.
