The Exact Cause of Former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati’s Death

Kenyans have woken up to the sad news that, the former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman, honorable Wafula Chebukati has reportedly passed away. This has been widely spread by various media houses in the country on their social media platforms.

The family has confirmed that, honorable Wafula Chebukati lost his life at 11pm on Monday night, the 20th of February, 2025. He lost the battle while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

Chebukati who oversaw the 2017 general elections and the 2022 general elections, had been critically ill and was admitted to a Nairobi hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for nearly a week. Reports indicated that he was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with sources revealing that his condition had worsened significantly.

He was initially receiving treatment at home but when the condition worsened, the family had to take him to the hospital. While at the hospital, his condition was so worse that he had to be put in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), unfortunately, he did not make it.

This has come as a shock to many people because, honorable Wafula Chebukati chose a private life especially after handing over power to President William Ruto. He chose a very private life after his tenure at the helm of IEBC came to an end.

His illness had been kept private, with close family members stating that he had been undergoing treatment at home before being rushed to the hospital when his condition deteriorated. Despite these reports, this is not the first time news of Chebukati’s alleged death has surfaced. In December 2024, similar claims spread on social media, only to be debunked later. The spread of misinformation has led many to question the authenticity of such reports.

Chebukati, who served as IEBC Chair from 2017 to 2023, played a significant role in Kenya’s electoral process, presiding over both the 2017 and 2022 general elections. His tenure was marked by controversy and praise in equal measure, making him one of the most talked-about figures in Kenya’s political landscape.

It is now time that everything that has happened in the past be put to rest because time cannot be changed, we can only move forward and cannot reverse the time. It should also be noted that leading as the Chairman of IEBC is one of the toughest jobs in Kenya because there are a lot of political interests.

Honorable Wafula Chebukati has finished his race and he should just be allowed to retire peacefully after finishing his race here on earth.
