The government of Kenya has taken a bold step and postponed the reopening of schools that was supposed to begin as from today, Monday 29th April 2024. This is due to the ravaging floods that have so far claimed lives, made roads impassable and also displaced some families.
The Ministry of Education sent a Memo in the wee hours of the night confirming that the Ministry has postponed the reopening of schools. The Ministry had been tasked o conduct a thorough research through the field officers.
Their main task was to assist the Ministry of Education in assessing the readiness and preparedness of the schools for reopening of term two. The reports which were backed up with data from different regions have confirmed that several schools have been severely affected by the ongoing rains and floods.
The Ministry of Education wrote that the damage that has been caused in some of the schools is so serious that the government will not risk putting the lives of the students and the staff in danger before putting the correct measures to deal with the floods.
The ministry of Education has therefore opted to postpone the reopening of schools in both primary and secondary level from Monday, 29th April 2024 to Monday 6th May 2024 by another further one week.
The Ministry of Education will now take this one week to work with the relevant stakeholders from different sectors so that measures can be put to mitigate the issue of floods and hence make the schools available for learning.
